Don’t Toss Those Eggshells! 7 Smart, Simple Ways I Use Them Around My Home

As a frugal mom who’s always looking for ways to stretch what God provides, I’ve learned that nothing in our home needs to go to waste — not even eggshells. With three growing kids, a busy home, and backyard chickens providing a steady supply of eggs, I’ve found some surprisingly useful (and even meaningful) ways to put those fragile shells to work.

Check out @kim.kids.chaos on instagram to see how I prepare the eggshells for #1. Check out the free printable at the bottom of the blog.

1. Garden Fertilizer (God’s Natural Boost)
Eggshells are rich in calcium, which plants love. I crush them up and sprinkle them directly into my garden beds, especially near tomatoes, peppers, and squash. It’s an easy way to feed the soil and remind my kids how God provides everything we need — even in the scraps.

2. Seed Starters for Spring Planting
Although I don’t do this myself because my cats dig up anything inside I have seen people who do. In early spring, save half-shells, rinse them, and poke a hole in the bottom for drainage. Fill with a bit of soil and plant a seed. When it’s time to transplant, the whole shell can go into the ground. It’s a fun hands-on project for kids and a gentle way to teach them about new beginnings and growth.

3. Feed Supplement for Chickens
If you’ve got chickens like we do, don’t buy calcium supplements — make your own! Bake crushed eggshells at 200°F for 10 minutes (to kill bacteria), crush finely, and mix into their feed. It strengthens their eggshells and keeps the cycle going — such a perfect example of God’s design for sustainability.

4. Natural Drain Cleaner Scrub
Crushed eggshells are slightly abrasive. Mix them with baking soda and use the combo to scrub out the sink or gently clean glass jars. It’s a non-toxic, budget-friendly option that doesn’t rely on harsh chemicals — plus, it’s a way to clean with what you already have.

5. Pest Control in the Garden
Slugs and soft-bodied pests avoid sharp edges. I sprinkle crushed shells around the base of vulnerable plants as a natural deterrent. It’s another way to protect what we’ve planted without spending a dime — and it works!

6. Compost Booster
Eggshells break down slowly, but they add valuable calcium to compost piles. Just crush them before tossing them in. It’s another lesson for the kids in patience and the beauty of letting God work even in the hidden, slow processes.

7. Homemade Calcium Powder (Yes, Really!)
If you’re into natural remedies or just want to cut down on store-bought supplements, you can grind baked eggshells into a fine powder and use them in smoothies, sprinkle a bit in oatmeal, or add to homemade dog food. (Just check with your vet or doctor first!) It’s amazing how the smallest things can support our health.

Closing Encouragement:
In Proverbs 31, we’re reminded that a virtuous woman “watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” Using what we have — even something as simple as eggshells — is one way I live out that calling. It’s a small act of stewardship that teaches my kids to be resourceful, to respect creation, and to look for God’s goodness in the everyday.

So next time you crack an egg, think twice before you toss that shell. There’s so much more it can do.

  1. […] Repurpose Eggshells – Don’t toss those eggshells! They’re little treasures packed with calcium and minerals that your garden will love. Crush them up and sprinkle them around your plants to deter slugs and snails, or add them to your compost pile to enrich your soil. In fact, I’ve got a whole other blog post dedicated to the amazing ways you can repurpose eggshells –…! […]
