Let’s be honest—beach days with kids are either magical… or mildly chaotic depending on how prepared you are.
After a few “why didn’t I bring that?!” trips, I’ve learned this:
👉 The right setup = less stress, more memories
👉 The wrong setup = sandy snacks, sunburns, and cranky kids
So here’s everything we actually bring for a smooth, budget-friendly, family beach day!

Perfect for laminating – keep one at home and stick one in the beach bag to make sure everything that left you you comes home with you…Only covered in sand!
🏖️ Beach Comfort Essentials (Set Yourself Up Right)
These are your base camp items—the difference between relaxing and constantly adjusting.
- Beach Chairs (lightweight + backpack style)
→ Low Beach Chairs - Beach Table (game changer for snacks + drinks)
→ Foldable Beach Table - Beach Umbrella or Shade Tent
→ Beach Umbrella - Large Beach Blanket (sand-resistant is key)
→ Sand Proof Beach Blanket
💡 Mom tip: If you do nothing else—bring shade and a table. It instantly upgrades your whole day.
☀️ Sun Protection (Non-Negotiable)
This is where you don’t cut corners.
- Sunscreen (reef-safe + kid-friendly)
→ Supergoop Sunscreen works the best! - SPF Lip Balm
→ Aquaphor is budget friendly and not colored or flavored so everyone in the family can use it. - Hats + Sunglasses for Everyone
→ These are polarized and curve a bit to fit nicely under a hat. - Lightweight Cover-Ups / Rash Guards
→ I love items that serve a multipurpose. This is perfect for the beach or hiking.
💡 Real life: Reapply more than you think. Especially those shoulders.
🧺 Towels + Dry-Off Zone
- Quick-Dry Beach Towels (less bulky = better)
→ Turkish Beach towels. Larger, Lighter, and more comfortable than any other towels I have used. - Extra Towel for Sand Cleanup
- Wet Bag for Damp Clothes
→ Wet bags are perfect for wet suits, messy cleanup storage, etc.
🧃 Food + Snack Setup (Avoid $20 Lunches)
This is where you save money and avoid meltdowns.
- Cooler (easy carry or backpack style)
→ This cooler works great for the beach, sporting events, and camping. It even collapses when empty for easier storage. - Reusable Ice Packs
→ Reusable ice packs. I use the same ones I pack in kids lunchboxes. - Snack Box / Organizer (huge win for kids)
→ Snackle Box with Lids. The lids help prevent sand from getting into all the food. Each kid can also have their own snackle box. - Refillable Water Bottles
→ Reusable water bottles are a must! Each kid has one and they use it for the beach, sports, school, outings, etc. - Simple Beach Lunch Ideas:
- Sandwiches
- Cut fruit
- Cheese sticks
- Crackers
- Granola bars
💡 Mom tip: Pre-pack snacks in individual containers = less sand + less fighting. Check out my post “Mom, I’m Hungry!” – 10 Portable, Non-Crushable Snacks to Survive Tournament Weekend (And Save Your Sanity) for ideas.
🔌 Tech + Convenience (Underrated Must-Haves)
- Portable Charger (you WILL need it)
→ This portable charger has its own plug so no need to remember extra cables. - Waterproof Phone Pouch
→ Perfect for the beach, pool, rainy sporting events, and cruises. - Portable Speaker (low volume, family vibe)
→ Portable speaker. This one is perfect for hiking, the beach, backyard pool fun, or hotel bedtime. It is lightweight, waterproof, and built with a clip to attach to a bag or chair.
🏖️ Kids’ Beach Fun (Keeps You Sitting Longer 🙌)
This is where the magic happens.
- Sand Toys Set (buckets, molds, scoops)
→ Sand toys with collapsible buckets! - Sand Crab Shovels (surprisingly a favorite)
→ Sand sifting shovels - Kites (perfect for breezy days)
→ Kites are perfect for the beach. - Boogie Boards or Floaties
→ Boogie Boards are an endless form of entertainment at the ocean for my kids! They get to ride the waves without going to deep and love racing each other.
💡 Real talk: The longer they’re entertained, the longer you get to relax. This year we are also taking Plaster of Paris with us to make some cool creations in the sand.
📚 Relaxation for Mom (Don’t Skip This)
Because you deserve to enjoy it too.
- A Good Book
→ I am really into Mysteries this season and plan on packing anything by Jeneva Rose or Frieda McFadden. You can also check out my post Books for Christian Parenting that Reignited My Faith for more recommendations. - Comfortable Tote Bag (everything in one place)
→ I love a good mesh bag for the beach. One less thing I have to worry about sand living in forever.
🧼 Clean-Up + End-of-Day Sanity
- Baby Wipes (even if your kids aren’t babies)
→Baby wipes are perfect for washing up hands and faces, wiping down chairs, etc.
💡 Game changer: Rinse feet before getting in the car = less sand everywhere
🧠 Final Thoughts: Keep It Simple
You don’t need the perfect setup.
You just need:
✔ Shade
✔ Snacks
✔ Happy kids
✔ A little prep
The rest? That’s where the memories come in.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not about having the best gear…
It’s about sitting in that chair, watching your kids laugh in the water, and thinking:
“This is what summer is supposed to feel like.”
